My SMPS journey began with the Washington, D.C. chapter, where I participated in the mentor program early in my career. The experience helped me grow professionally, find my voice, and gain the confidence to advocate for myself.
When I moved to Los Angeles, joining the local SMPS chapter gave me an immediate connection to the A/E/C community. I once again participated in the mentor program, where I met professionals who would later become my coworkers at my next employer. I also joined the SMPS Los Angeles Social Media Committee to gain insights into committee work. SMPS provided more than professional development; it created relationships that directly shaped the next chapter of my career.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I relocated to Denver and joined SMPS Colorado. Although building connections during that time was challenging, the SMPS community remained a valuable source of support. Through relationships formed within the chapter, I found opportunities with my next two employers.
After benefiting from SMPS for many years, it was time to give back. I became chair of the SMPS Colorado One-to-One Mentorship Program and later served as a mentor myself. Helping others build confidence, expand their networks, and navigate their careers has been one of the most rewarding parts of my SMPS experience.
At every stage of my journey, SMPS has provided a community of like-minded professionals, a trusted sounding board, and access to educational programs that support continued growth. The relationships I have built have extended beyond individual events or job opportunities; they have become lasting professional connections and friendships.
My advice is simple: take the leap. Step outside your comfort zone, introduce yourself, join a program, or volunteer for a leadership role. One new connection may open a door you never expected, and that relationship may last throughout your career.
